Documentaries

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I have been watching quite a few documentaries over the last year. So I thought I’d write about them on my blog. I have set-up a page to list the documentaries I’ve seen with my thoughts on each and with links to them if you can watch them online. Click here to go to the page or click on the “Documentaries” link at the bottom of the screen.

Here is the list at the moment, I will review each when I get the time:

Wal*mart - The High Cost of Low prices

Jesus Camp

Imperial Grand Strategy

An Inconvenient Truth

The Corporation

The Yes Men

White Trash Racism

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

I have been caught up over the last few days with the racism row in Big Brother. I don’t know whether it is because I have been quite bored recently, but I really feel that this has been an important incident.

Jade Goody, her boyfriend and mum were put in the Celebrity big Brother House with other celebrities including Jermaine Jackson and Shilpa Shetty. Jades mum, Jackie, was very rude to Shilpa and refused to call her by her name, calling her “Princess” instead. Jackie’s attitude and behaviour led jermaine to call her “White Trash” under his breath.

When Jackie was voted out, it was Jades turn, along with Danielle Lloyd and Jo from S Club 7. They began bullying Shilpa and ended up being racist about her.

The term “White Trash” is not a nice one since no human should be seen as low as “trash” or the rubbish we throw away. Yet if people are going to behave “trashy” - willfully ignorant, rude, demeaning, crass, etc. - then what do they expect?

Jade Goody on Big BrotherWhen Jade was voted out of the house with 82% of the votes, she said she was not racist and that she was not a bad person. But what racist believes they are a bad person?! Danielle has also told Shilpa that she is not a bad person, even though she declared that Shilpa should “f**k off home”.
It angers me that they think they are good people, yet they clearly aren’t. It is moral relitivism gone mad. With Mary-Lou being of Filippino origin and our future children being mixed race, it angers and scares me that there are still people who are racist. I think it is a good thing that this issue has been confronted my the media so strongly.

And I truly hope that the media, and our society, will stop tolerating and even celebrating stupidity and ignorance.

Broken World

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

I came across this today, the 10 most unreported humanitarian stories of 2006 from Doctors Without Borders. The stories come from around the world including Somalia, Colombia and India.

Since Amy’s death, Mary-Lou and I have been tring to grapple with a new understanding of the world around us. We were previously quite blissfully unaware to the extent in which life, existance and mankind are broken in the most depraved ways. Then, throwing Jesus into the mix makes it even more confusing.

I doubt many answers are going to come our way.
